Welcome to the Calgary Barracuda Swim Club!
About Us
Calgary Barracuda Swim Club is a community, non-profit organization registered under the Societies Act of Alberta.
We are a Recreational Competitive Club. That is: We swim for recreation and we compete with like-minded clubs in Calgary area (Glenmore Seals and Calgary Keikos to name a few).
Our season runs from beginning of September to end of April.
Our Mission
To develop the love of swimming and provide the opportunity for all swimmers to explore their athletic potential to the fullest extent they desire in a socially vibrant, fun, and respectful team environment. To promote the growth of the whole person, including the confidence to meet life’s challenges, fostered through coaching excellence and active parent support.
Fees & Due Dates
Calgary Barracuda Swim Club is dedicated to providing a quality recreational program at an affordable cost.
Our season commitment runs from September to end of April of the following year, during which we only collect two payments per season.
As part of your season's fee, all swim meets hosted by our club or to which our club is invited are included.
Each new member will receive a swim cap at the beginning of the season at no additional cost. Returning members can obtain a replacement for free if needed.
While a Barracuda logo swimsuit is not mandatory, we highly recommend it. Outfitting the team in matching apparel fosters team spirit, presents a professional appearance at meets, and instills pride in the swimmers. The sale of these items is at cost to the club, and we do not profit from them. Please visit our Apparel page for more information.
Payment Information ($650 total for the 2024/25 season + the $200 post dated volunteer bond cheque)
- The first payment of $350 is due at registration.
- The second payment of $300 is due on November 15th.
- $200 post dated volunteer bond cheque due upon first practice after successfully completing the entrance assessment
NOTE: While we offer the fee be paid in two installments, we welcome those to pay the full amount right away if you wish to do so.
We have transitioned to accepting payments via e-transfer (email money). However, we can still accommodate payments by cheque. Please make arrangements with the treasurer at YYCBarracudasTreasurer@gmail.com if needed.
Withdrawals From The Club
Withdrawal requests must be made to REGISTRAR, and cc'd to Treasurer.
Please make your withdrawal request prior to November 15th, in order for us not to charge the 2nd payment (i.e. Jan to April fee). You can continue swimming until end of December.
Generally, once the payments are made, they are NOT refundable.
If you had registered early in the year (e.g. July/August) and wish to withdraw before the season starts, the session fee (Sept to Dec) may be refunded to you at the discretion of the Registrar and Treasurer. The registration fee of $30 is NOT refundable.
Practice Cancellations
In some cases, practices will be cancelled (sometimes on a very short notice) due to circumstances outside the club's influence and/or control. The Club does not issue refunds in these cases.
Time Commitment
Barracuda Swim Club has a contract with Seton YMCA for 2, 1 Hour Time Slots
Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings
Younger Swimmers start in the first hour and graduate into the second hour
Depending on swimmer's skill and progress, coaches may choose to move swimmers within these time slots.
Swimmers from the late hour who show an interest in volunteering to help coaches with the early hour swimmers and learn the skills of coaching are welcome to speak to reach out to our coaches to discuss their interest.
Volunteer Commitment
Nine hours of volunteer hours REQUIRED per family
The Club operates solely through the volunteer work of its members and families (Coaching is the only exception to this rule).
Throughout the season, we hold numerous athletic events requiring a large number of volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator will request volunteers for all positions a couple of weeks before each event. The Volunteer Coordinator reserves the right to assign volunteers to positions of their choice or any other position required to be filled.
No prior experience is required, and unlike competitive clubs, we do not mandate that volunteers complete any online training or certifications.
While we are serious about racing and competing, we maintain a more relaxed atmosphere compared to others. All Swim Meet positions are available for download in the "Documents" section of our Website, so please familiarize yourself prior to an event.
Volunteer commitment hours can be fulfilled by parents, adults in the household, or older siblings.
Volunteer commitments can be fulfilled in one of three ways:
- Holding a position on the board of directors.
- Holding one of the non-board season-long positions (such as OnDeck Meet Manager or IT/IS Meet Manager).
- Being on-call for meets and events and completing the minimum required number of hours.
Swim meets count for 5 hours, distance swims for 1 or 2 hours, and club championships for 2 hours. We hold 2 swim meets and 2 distance swims per year. Club Championships are held over 2 days, 2 hours each. Please review the schedule at the beginning of the season and plan accordingly. Families who do not fulfill their volunteer commitment will not receive priority for re-registration in the next season.
For the 2024/2025 season, we will be reintroducing a volunteer bond of $200 per family and will require parents to volunteer for at least nine hours throughout the season. This change is meant to encourage greater parent involvement and diversify the volunteers assisting at events. We are not requesting this bond upfront; instead, we ask that you provide the club with a post-dated cheque (for April 30, 2025). Your post-dated cheque will be due on the first swim practice at the start of the season. Cheques will be returned at the end of the season if you have met the volunteer hour requirements.
Please contact Anthony Nguyen Sturm at YYCBarracudasTreasurer@gmail.com to schedule cheque delivery and pickup.
Our Sponsors
There are a tremendous amount of costs associated with the operation and management of a swim club. Sponsorships are a great way to help the Barracudas while advertising your brand or business. Your Sponsorship can be used towards Social Events, Branded Apparel for the swimmers, club technologies such as our website and management software, swim meet materials, etc. If own a business or work for a business that supports youth sports and would like to be a Sponsor, please reach out to a member of the board.
NOTE: If you are interested in helping the club with a sponsorship and wish to do so anonymously, that works too! The Club has had a number of anonymous sponsors in the past who have really made an impact and we are thankful for all of them.
